Powerplay powers IceRays past Gorillas

Posted by: Sabrbug on Feb 04, 2010 CHL News
Three power play goals from the top-ranked unit in the league were the difference as the Odessa Jackalopes topped the Corpus Christi IceRays 5-2 at the Ector County Coliseum in Odessa, Texas on Tuesday night.

Mike Ramsay led the way with a pair of goals for the Jackalopes. The IceRays fell to 18-19-6 on the year, but remained in a tie with Rio Grande Valley for the fifth and final playoff spot in the Southern Conference.

The IceRays spent the majority of the first period in the attacking zone and outshot the Jackalopes 12-7 to start the game, but fell behind thanks to tremendous special teams from the Jackalopes #1 power play and #2 penalty killing units in the CHL. Odessa scored a pair of power play goals on only two chances in the first, and kept the IceRays off the board on three power play opportunities of their own, including nearly a minute of five-on-three time.

Odessa made it 1-0 at 10:16 when Jeff Pierce redirected a slapshot at the bottom of the slot past Kevin Beech. Then at 13:31 Mike Ramsay scored on a slapshot from the right circle to extend the lead to 2-0. The Jacks took that lead into the first intermission.

The Rays came out in the second and again pressured the Jacks, but again were held at bay by Juha Toivonen. Corpus Christi outshot the Jacks 6-0 to start the frame and 14-8 in the period. The Jacks scored to take a 3-0 lead after Rob Jarvis was hit up high in the IceRays zone, taking him out of the play, and leaving Brian Swiniarski untouched at the top of the crease where he took a pass and buried a shot at 6:26. The IceRays protested the non call on the hit to Jarvis, but not no avail. Corpus Christi got on the board at 11:45 when Ryan Bennett took a pass in the right circle and wristed a shot past Toivonen to get the IceRays on the board. Odessa took the 3-1 lead into the final frame.

The teams traded goals again in the third, with Ramsay getting his second of the night on the power play at 12:01. R.G. Flath scored for the Rays at 16:49 to cap the scoring and the Jacks held on for a 5-2 win.

Kevin Beech (7-4-2) took the loss, making 23 saves on 28 shots. Juha Toivonen (17-3-2) earned the win making 33 saves on 35 shots. The IceRays power play went 0-8 and the Jacks went 3-5. The IceRays outshot the Jacks 35-28 in the game.
