Mudbugs saddened by loss of area youth

Posted by: Sabrbug on Oct 10, 2008 Mudbugs News
The Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs play their first preseason game against Mississippi tonight, but their minds aren't on hockey.

The Central Hockey League team is thinking about George Cloutier.

The 12-year-old and long-time goaltender with the Junior Mudbugs died Wednesday. Caddo Parish sheriff deputies said Cloutier was found hanging from a tree in his backyard in southeast Shreveport. The investigation is ongoing.
"He was just a fantastic, fantastic young man," Mudbugs coach Scott Muscutt said. "I often used him as a role model when I spoke to my own kids as to what I hoped they'd be like when I wasn't around. He was a phenomenal young goaltender. He will be very, very, very missed. It doesn't get any sadder."

Muscutt, defenseman Quade Lightbody and goaltender Ken Carroll will leave Mississippi after tonight's preseason game so they can attend Cloutier's funeral Saturday in Shreveport. The family is requesting that attendees wear jeans and hockey jerseys to the funeral. Services are at 11 a.m. at the All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church.

"To tell you hockey was this kid's life would be an understatement," Muscutt said. "George played on some very competitive teams. I want to get started immediately on honoring what a phenomenal life he has led. It's going to take an entire lifetime to honor him."

Cloutier became a fixture around the Mudbugs locker room. He even attended practices. Carroll gave him private lessons. Cloutier wore Carroll's No. 34 and used Carroll's old sticks.

"It's hard to take because I know he looked up to me," Carroll said. "He was just one of those kids who worked hard at everything and didn't want to fail at being a hockey player. That's what he always strived to do. He was just one of the guys He was always smiling."

Muscutt said assistant coach Trevor Buchanan will assume head coaching duties when the Mudbugs play Mississippi in their second preseason game Saturday. The Mudbugs, who started training camp Monday, open their regular season Oct. 17 against the Texas Brahmas.

"It's tough for me to keep it together," Muscutt said. "To me, George was one of my kids. I loved watching him play. I loved watching him enjoy things I enjoyed when I was a kid. I can only lend support to his family right now because I know they need it at this very tragic time."

Christopher George Cloutier Funeral Home Information and Obituary

Christopher George Cloutier left to be with a higher power on October 8, 2008. Just like after a hockey game - he wanted to be the first to shake hands with everybody on the other side. Not only to congratulate them, but to show that he was a leader. He was always proud to lead his team whether on or off the ice.

In his twelve years he never ceased to amaze us with his dedication to work or fun, especially fun.

Family wishes to give a heart felt special thank you to some of the greatest role models that have come to our area, The Bossier-Shreveport MudBugs. Through their guidance, coaching and achievements he learned a lot about what was expected out of life. Many other coaches, teachers, and family friends went into the embodiment of this man and for that we thank you.

Some goals were attained and some were not, but the dream was there and will always be there. He was the perfect U.S. to Canada exchange student. In his brief career as a hockey player he played for Texarkana Outlaws, Green Eggs and Ham of Dallas, Cajun Catahoulas of Lafayette, Sharp Shooters of Lafayette and many local teams. Some highlights were national championships for LA and Junior Olympics and goalie against Michael Buble at the Century Tel Center.

He cherished his time in the woods on the lake at the beach with his family. He loved people and he loved life.

Loving every memory of him are his family Chuck, Gretchen, Jordy and his paternal grandparents Patricia Colbert and Gordon Cloutier and numerous relatives and friends.

To our extended families coming in from across the nation we love you.

Youth's death has Mudbugs on mission to fulfill his dream

The Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs opened the 2008-09 season Friday. They were victorious over Texas, their nemesis, 5-1.

The win was fun for those packed into CenturyTel Center, but thanks to an emotionally charged pregame tribute to a fallen, loved and admired Mudbugs family member, Friday had perspective.

At 12 years old, George Cloutier was as dedicated as any Mudbugs fan, but he wasn't supposed to be here to kick off the season. He should have been in Dallas, where his love for hockey, for the Mudbugs, would help showcase a flourishing junior career.

Cloutier was scheduled to be between the pipes, wearing his beloved No. 34 jersey, for the Cajun Catahoulas.

He wore 34 because his hero, Mudbugs goalie Ken Carroll, does. He even used his stick.

But Carroll was the only Mudbugs family member to wear No. 34 this weekend.

Cloutier is in a better place.

The Caddo Middle Magnet student passed tragically last week. His death didn't just read in black and white with everyone else on the inside pages of a newspaper.

The loss of Cloutier has left an entire community a dark, dark blue.

Cloutier didn't put on the skates this weekend. He didn't wear K.C.'s number. And, unfortunately, he was here Friday; brought to life by a chilling tribute.

Cloutier save after Cloutier save was detailed throughout the CTC, thanks to the work of the voice of the Mudbugs, Travis Huntington. If that wasn't enough to tug at your heartstrings, this place echoed with fans chanting George's name as professional hockey players tapped their sticks in unison.

"I can't describe the feelings and the emotions," George's dad, Chuck Cloutier, said. "I thank God for every minute my family has spent around the Mudbugs."

Friday's outpouring was just a taste of what the Mudbugs organization and its fans had to offer George.

Mudbugs head coach Scott Muscutt has prided himself on recruiting "character guys" to wear the teal and purple. It has never been about just talent and skill.

It's very possible the Cloutier family has benefited from Muscutt's mantra more than any player or fan ever has or will.

Former Mudbugs defenseman Tony Bergin flew in from Holland to attend George's funeral. It meant that much. He told Chuck, "That is hockey; this is George."

Carroll and fellow Mudbug Quade Lightbody opted out of a preseason game — one of just two for the team — to attend the service.

"I saw emotions out of these guys that I've never seen before," Chuck said. "I think it hit some of these guys harder than anyone."

The emotions didn't end when the puck dropped Friday. The Mudbugs awarded the game puck to Chuck.

There wasn't a dry eye to be found. Tears flowed from men with the most macho of reputations. In a blink, as fast as George was gone, the droplets froze on the weathered playing surface.

"There is going to be an ice rink built in this town," a misty-eyed Muscutt said. "It is going to be called George Cloutier Pond. I'm not going to sleep until it happens. I can't let that kid down. I know what he wants. I know what his dream was. We're going to make it come true.

"It's going to take a lot of support. I'm calling all cars right now. I want people to step up to the plate. This is a special, special kid who had a great dream. We're in a position as professional athletes and coaches to go rally troops and make it happen.

"That's what we have to do."

Tears replaced the pregame jitters for Carroll, who earned Friday's victory between the pipes with 37 saves.

He represented the No. 34 well.

"I don't even know how to put it into words. To have his dad come down; he's an inspiration for us right now," Carroll said. "There is no sense holding (the tears) back.

"Tonight was his night. It wasn't our night."

Just as impressive was the outreach by the Mudbugs' hated opponent. Dan Wildfong, a legend in this hockey community, has started his second season as the head coach of the Texas Brahmas — the team that swept the Mudbugs out of the playoffs last season.

The emotions, the bad blood, the sweep; it all seems simply meaningless now.

"He was always smiling," said Wildfong, who says the Cloutier family took him, and many other Mudbugs "under their wing."

"He was always happy, so eager and loved the game of hockey. I remember pulling into their driveway and those kids were out there playing (hockey) every time."

George's funeral wasn't your typical funeral. Attendees were encouraged to wear anything and everything Mudbugs. Jersey, hats, T-shirts; people paid their respects in style.

"It wasn't for us. It was about him," Chuck said of the service.

Caddo Middle Magnet celebrated George Cloutier Day on Wednesday. Classmates wore jerseys on that day, too.

Chuck took the trip to CMM on Wednesday. He had to check out George's "other life."

Dodgeball.

Chuck said there were the good days: "He'd come home and say, 'I got five people out today. I got six people out.'"

And the bad.

"'Dad, I got knocked out first today.'"

Wednesday was a step in the healing process.

"I wanted to see where he had fun," Chuck said.

The giant step, perhaps the final one in some regards, came Friday.

The ice. The goals. The chants. The family.

The Lafayette-based Catahoulas made a pit stop en route to Dallas. Wearing their jerseys, with new No. 34 patches, the group of youngsters took in the pregame ceremony before heading west on I-20.

They all huddled around Chuck; perhaps oblivious to the depth of what has happened. But like Friday's win and the support from the Mudbugs family, the group of kids gave George's dad everything he could possibly want at a time like this.

Except George.
