New CBA rules: Who came out ahead?

Posted by: MillerFan on Sep 04, 2010
NHL News
This episode is over. The NHL has approved Ilya Kovalchuk’s(notes) contract with the New Jersey Devils. The league has dropped its investigations into four other contracts.

The league and the NHL Players’ Association have established more specific salary cap rules for future deals. But the soap opera continues. When the sides signed the current collective bargaining agreement in 2005, no one anticipated the mess it would create.

Maple Leafs' stock slowly rising

Posted by: MillerFan on Sep 03, 2010
NHL News
There is guarded optimism surrounding the Toronto Maple Leafs heading into the 2010-11 NHL season, much of that due to the astute moves made this offseason by general manager Brian Burke.

Through trades and free agency, Burke has assembled an interesting mix of forwards that should compete at a higher level than last season, one that saw the Leafs finish 25th in goals scored per game with only 2.56.

Another Kovalchuk arbitration case could cost NHL

Posted by: MillerFan on Sep 03, 2010
NHL News
On the surface, this is about Ilya Kovalchuk's contract. What we're really going to learn, however, is if the NHL and the NHLPA can make a deal. We're two years away from the CBA's conclusion, and the hawks are spreading wings. (Never mind that everyone in a position of power on either side should be fired if there is another stoppage.)

Late Wednesday, Larry Brooks reported in the New York Post that the league has delivered an "ultimatum" to the PA. Unless the terms are accepted, Kovalchuk will be joined in unexpected free agency by Roberto Luongo.

Fighting Words

Posted by: Sabrbug on Sep 02, 2010
NHL News
Furious that the NHL has threatened to revoke the contract that his client Marc Savard signed with the Boston Bruins, agent Larry Kelly blasted NHL commissioner Gary Bettman in an interview with Ottawa radio station the TEAM 1200.

"I'd really like to see a true commissioner style, someone who has the best interest of the game in mind rather than the situation they have now," Kelly told the TEAM. "Bettman is (like) the president of the league and he clearly is on the owners side on every issue. I really think it should be a commissioner. With a commissioner you have somebody who is totally independent and I think it would be a much less acrimonious situation."

Long-term gains a pain?

Posted by: MillerFan on Sep 02, 2010
NHL News
The NHL has more than Ilya Kovalchuk's revised contract in its sights. As part of the league's two-day extension of their review of the 15-year, $100-million deal with the New Jersey Devils for the Russian sniper, the New York Post is reporting that the NHL has given the NHL Players' Association an ultimatum on two other long-term contracts.

The league reportedly will allow Kovalchuk's contract and grandfather Vancouver Canucks goaltender Roberto Luongo's 12-year, $64-million deal and Chicago Blackhawks forward Marian Hossa's 12-year, $63.3-million contract if the NHLPA approves the following tweaks to the current Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Terms of the deal were not revealed, but multiple media reports say Niemi will make $2 million this season. "Antti's play last season speaks for itself," Sharks General Manager Doug Wilson said in a statement.

Will the Kostitsyns be better apart?

Posted by: MillerFan on Sep 01, 2010
NHL News
No matter how well they get along during the course of their lives, invariably, there are moments when brothers need to be apart. Sometimes just a brief separation is all that’s required for both parties to restore proper perspective with regard to the perils of things like flinging food across the dinner table or having the living room couch double as the top rope in a wrestling ring.

Other issues require a more divisive wedge. If Sergei Kostitsyn had his way, 2010-11 would be the second season he and brother Andrei played apart.

Posted by: MillerFan on Sep 01, 2010
NHL News
Sitting behind a microphone and next to his new boss, Marty Turco smiled while watching his own highlights play on a nearby television screen. The setting was the Stadium Club inside Chicago's United Center Tuesday, where Turco was officially introduced as the Chicago Blackhawks' new No.1 goaltender.

Turco took questions about everything from his decision to sign with the Hawks, to his own desire win a Cup, to his noteworthy puck-handling skills. Turco talked about how happy and excited he was, but speaking for him more than words was the smile he wore along with a gray tie and pinstriped navy blazer.
