The body pulled from a Quebec lake by provincial police divers on Monday is that of Gervais Munger, co-owner of a major junior hockey team, a family spokesman has confirmed. Munger, 52, was in a Zodiac boat with three friends when the boat's motor stalled and all four were thrown overboard just after noon on Saturday.
The accident happened on Lac St-Jean, a large lake about 250 kilometres northwest of Quebec City. All except Munger were able to swim to shore. None of the people in the boat was wearing a life-jacket.

The popular owner of a Quebec junior hockey team who went missing in a boating accident Saturday hasn’t been found despite two days of intense search efforts. Quebec provincial police divers scoured the waters of Lac-St-Jean on Sunday for any signs of Gervais Munger, the co-owner of the Sagueneens de Chicoutimi junior hockey team.
Munger, 52, disappeared Saturday in the massive lake some 230 kilometres north of Quebec City. He was on board a boat with three other men when a mechanical problem caused the vessel to spin in violent circles, tossing them into the waves.

Women’s hockey, even here in Canada, sits in purgatory with luge, skeleton and biathlon in non-Olympic years. Much of the hockey-consuming public cares only when Team Canada is playing for gold – okay, in other words playing the USA at the Olympics – and cares not a whit about the women’s game for all but those few days every four years.
Truth is, the women’s game is important to the mothers and daughters and sisters who live the game every day and have as much passion for it as their fathers or brothers or husbands.

Canadian women's hockey superstar Hayley Wickenheiser, 32, announced Thursday at the Molson World Hockey Summit that the 2014 Sochi Olympics will be her final appearance on the national team.
Wickenheiser, 32, has played for Team Canada for the past 17 years and has been an integral part of the team's run of three-straight gold medals in Olympic competition, including a championship-game victory over the United States this past February in Vancouver. Wickenheiser captained the Canadians in that tournament.

Rene Fasel says he’s ready to work with the NHL, not for it. The president of the International Ice Hockey Federation, a guest speaker Tuesday at the Molson Canadian World Hockey Summit at the Air Canada Centre, continued to advocate for NHL participation at the world championships leading to the 2014 Olymnpics in Sochi, Russia, but was deeply opposed to the North American pros setting up shop in Europe.
“Good luck, I will fight like hell for my territory,” Fasel told host Jim Hughson. “Give us (European leagues) some consideration.

The irony did not escape Bob Boughner. The former NHL tough guy -- 1,382 penalty minutes in 632 regular-season games, including 111 fights -- was on a panel at the World Hockey Summit Tuesday at the Air Canada Centre talking about skill development.
He was sitting next to former NHLer Brendan Shanahan, now working for the league, on the stage for the first seminar at the Summit, which has brought together many of the movers and shakers in hockey to do some navel gazing over the next three days. "Shanny and I were talking about that over coffee this morning -- being on this panel -- who'd have thought?" Boughner said with a laugh.

Keegan Kelly said there have been days in his short junior hockey experience where he has to get out a map. The 2010 Lee graduate is showing his teammates on the Tulsa Rampage hockey team where Midland is located, and they realize it's the city that's close to the town where the movie "Friday Night Lights" was set.
But Kelly is a hockey player not a football player, and he along with a half a dozen other players, are beginning to blaze a trail out of the Permian Basin for young hockey players.

Alex Ovechkin took a few swipes at Russian hockey during a radio interview on Friday, including calling the Kontinental Hockey League inferior to the National Hockey League.
He also had choice comments about Russian youth hockey and critics of his play with the Washington Capitals. Regarding the KHL versus the NHL, Ovechkin told Russia's Radio Sport: "There is no point to compare the leagues. Let them call me names, call me a traitor, but this is true."

The Louisiana IceGators are set to return to the Cajundome for the 2010-2011 season.
The Cajundome Commission approved a two-year lease agreement Monday with the owners of the minor league hockey team, which drew record crowds in the 1990s but disbanded in 2005 after attendance dwindled. A new owner, Danny Smith, revived the team in 2009, but the games have been played at nearby Blackham Coliseum.

Canada made it three in a row at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament, topping the U.S., 1-0, in the final. Canada center Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored the game's lone goal just 1:42 into the game, and Tyson Teichmann made 22 saves to register the shutout.
The goal was the team-best fifth for Nugent-Hopkins, who plays for the WHL's Red Deer Rebels, is a top-rated prospect for the 2011 Entry Draft and will attend the 2010 NHL Research, Development and Orientation Camp Fueled by G Series next week in Etobicoke, Ont.

Once again, the U.S. and Canada will meet for supremacy in an international hockey tournament. Both teams won their semifinal matches Friday at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament to advance to a battle in Saturday's final.
It's the fourth time in 2010 the two nations will meet for a gold medal. The U.S. won the World Under-17 Challenge and World Junior Championship in January, while the Canada won Olympic gold in February.

"So, you're from Canada? You can play ice hockey whenever you want then?" This was the beginning of the first conversation I had with one of my students at the Canada/Israel Hockey School 2010.
I'm in Metulla, the northernmost city in Israel and a wrist shot away from the Lebanese border. Hockey is not the first thing you normally think of when you enter this part of the world.

Derian Hatcher was one of the more intimidating defensemen of his time. At 6-foot-5 and 235 pounds, Hatcher's ability to practically check opposing players through the boards earned him that reputation during a playing career that lasted from 1991-2008.
These days, Hatcher is passing his experiences on to younger players, including his two sons, Chase and Kelton. Hatcher was able to coach Chase during the 2010 OHL Cup Showcase Tournament in March, an experience that was memorable for father and son.

It was a meeting Manitoba Moose general manager Craig Heisinger wasn't looking forward to this week. Heisinger huddled with five-year team captain Mike Keane on Monday to inform him the American Hockey League team wasn't renewing the 43-year-old forward's contract.
Keane wanted to play another year, but wasn't upset with the news and may retire. "He appreciated and was thankful for his time here," Heisinger said Tuesday after the club officially announced the move.

Dennis Williams played in five games for the Odessa Jackalopes during the 2001-02 Central Hockey League season. Despite his brief tenure with the team, the fresh-faced 22-year-old rookie forward out of Bowling Green State University received some valuable advice from then-Odessa head coach Don McKee - if you want to be a coach, go back to school.
"Do what's right for you," Williams recalls McKee saying. Williams, a Stratford, Ontario, native, took the advice to heart - hanging up his skates and picking up his books and coaching whistle.

There's been a lot of talk about what will happen to international hockey if the next collective bargaining agreement doesn't allow NHL players to participate in the Winter Olympics.
Russians have said they'll go anyway (so much so that it's been brought up as a point of contention in the ongoing Ilya Kovalchuk negotiations). Fans have said they wouldn't watch without them. Everyone probably agrees that the game as a whole would suffer on a global level.

Mike Fisher had quite a weekend. The Ottawa Senators winger was married to country singer Carrie Underwood Saturday evening at a resort in Greensboro, Ga. Security around the ceremony was tight as some 250 guests attended the wedding according to the Ottawa Sun.
The Sun reports that current Senators Chris Phillips, Shean Donovan, Nick Foligno and Chris Neil were in attendance, as well as current New York Rangers defenseman Wade Redden, Fisher's former teammate with the Senators. Luminaries from the country music world also attended, including Tim McGraw and Faith Hill.

Sometimes a hockey fan just has to laugh at some of the things happening in the NHL. So far, the off-season has been mostly exciting; unfortunately the real fun things like the entry draft and the opening of free agency are gone...so now us hardcore fans have to endure a few pretty boring months until the new season starts.
But at least during this time all the loons come out, and some really baffling yet comical moments in the NHL occur. I made a list...share some laughs with me.

It was one of the strongest seasons in CHL history relating to players being called-up to the American Hockey League as 26 call-ups involving 22 different players occurred during the 2009-10 season.
Several of those call-ups made big impacts with their AHL clubs and one CHL player moved all the way to the National Hockey League during the course of the season. “We are very pleased with the development of our players and the strides we have made as a league,” said Jim Wiley, CHL Director of Hockey Operations.

Patrick Kane and Sidney Crosby are two markedly different NHL personalities. That is to say, Kane has one, while Crosby doesn't — at least publicly. Together, they represent the fork in the road we're forcing our NHL stars to come to.
Kane's post-Cup and playoff antics have endeared him to many, including some of those that were so quick to string him up in the wake of his two ripples in the pond — a cab-trip gone wrong, and a shirtless limo ride.

Flint Generals fans might not have to wait much longer to learn the fate of their favorite hockey team. Perani Arena manager Jim Cain said this afternoon that lease negotiations are ongoing and that “I think there will be something coming out tomorrow.”
