Defending champs still sporting long to-do-list

With less than a month left before the start of Central Hockey League training camp, Rapid City Rush coach Joe Ferras still has a long to-do list. Lots to do and not much time to do it.

The defending CHL President's Cup champion Rush have announced 13 players signed or re-signed for the 2010-2011 campaign. Ferras expects between 24 and 26 players to be in camp beginning on Oct. 4. "The number one thing is finalizing the roster, there's no doubt about it," Ferras said on Friday.

Marshall Returns For Another Mission

The Mississippi RiverKings of the Central Hockey League have announced the signing of defenseman Dane Marshall to the roster for the 2010-2011 season.

RiverKings’ Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Kevin “Killer” Kaminski says the native of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia adds a strong steadiness for his blue line corps. “Marsh will bring stability as this is his third year with us,” Kaminski said.

Penguins Sign Forward Mike Comrie

The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed forward Mike Comrie to a one-year contract, it was announced today by executive vice president and general manager Ray Shero. The contract is for the 2010-11 season and is worth $500,000.

Comrie, 29, has played nine NHL seasons with Edmonton, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Ottawa and the NY Islanders. In 568 career games, he has posted 167 goals, 192 assists, 359 points and 48 power-play goals. Comrie has appeared in 32 postseason contests, totaling 10 points (4G-6A).

Eagles Trade for Veteran Rycroft

The Colorado Eagles announced today that they have acquired forward Daymen Rycroft from the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees in exchange for defenseman Felipe Larranaga, future considerations and the CHL rights of veteran defenseman Jim Jackson (currently signed to play in Asia's "High1" league for the upcoming season).

"We're thrilled to be bringing Daymen Rycroft to Colorado ," said Eagles head coach, president and general manager, Chris Stewart . "We feel that he possesses a high-end skill set as well as the added bonus of playing with a gritty edge; he's a very complete player.

Hard Workers Return to Thunder

The Wichita Thunder announced two more roster additions on Thursday, signing center Chris Greene and re-signing defenseman Jason Woll. Greene returns to Wichita after a terrific campaign with the SPHL's Mississippi Surge.

Greene set career-highs with 16 goals and 51 points while notching 144 PIM in 56 games played. The Massena, NY native spent parts of two seasons with the Thunder, arriving in a December 2007 trade with Arizona for Tyler Liebel, and leaving in a January 2009 deal with Corpus Christi in exchange for Mike Zbriger.

Killer Bees swap Rycrof tfor blueliner, futures

The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees of the Central Hockey League (CHL) today announced that the team has acquired defenseman Felipe Larranaga (feh-LEE-pay lah-rehn-YAH-gah), the rights to defenseman Jim Jackson and future considerations from the Colorado Eagles in exchange for forward Daymen Rycroft.

Larranaga, 29, played in 58 games for the Eagles last season and collected 20 points (4-16-20) and 45 penalty minutes (PIM). Prior to joining the Eagles, the 5-foot-8, 175-pound mobile blueliner played in 166 games for teams in Denmark and Norway and recorded 45 points (6-39-45) and 70 PIM there.

Tulsa Announces Affiliation With Avs

For the first time since the rebirth of the Central Hockey League in 1992, the Tulsa Oilers are affiliated with a National Hockey League team.

Oilers head coach Bruce Ramsay announced the Oilers have reached an affiliation agreement with the Colorado Avalanche of the NHL and the Lake Erie Monsters of the American Hockey League.

The Missouri Mavericks forward was one of the Central Hockey League team’s top offensive threats when he was healthy last season, and this year he promised fans they would see something special every time he took the ice.

Clutch Korchinski Returns to Bucks

The Laredo Bucks of the Central Hockey League announced Thursday that they have re-signed 2007 CHL All-Star Chris Korchinski for the 2010-11 season. Korchinski, who played two seasons in Laredo from 2006-2008, spent the last two seasons in the ECHL.

The 24-year-old Korchinski (pronounced core-CHIN-ski) is entering his fifth professional season and has put up 187 points (90-97=187) and 235 PIM’s in 235 career games. In his two seasons in Laredo Korchinski scored a total of 106 points (47-59=106) with a +31 rating in 122 games, and put up 28 points (16-12=28) in 31 career CHL playoff games.

Sundogs Return Three in Visser, Lehtinen and Nesdill

Arizona Sundogs Head Coach and General Manager Marco Pietroniro announced today the team has re-signed three players in Jason Visser, Rob Lehtinen and Mike Nesdill for the upcoming 2010-11 Central Hockey League season.

Visser returns to the Sundogs for his fourth season with the team in 2010-11. The 28-year-old forward appeared in 43 games during the 2009-10 season recording nine goals, 12 assists and 18 penalty minutes (PIM) while injuries limited him to just 13 games in 2008-09.

Reiter ready to go

For the past month, Kevin Reiter has been preparing for the upcoming season by practicing with several members of the Pittsburgh Penguins. There really is no substitute for taking shots from the likes of Sidney Crosby and Pascal Dupuis, and Reiter couldn't ask for a better experience.

"You don't realize how good these guys are until you're on the ice, and then you've got a whole new repsect," Reiter said. "It's very quick. They're good guys and they treat you like anybody else."

The Bloomington PrairieThunder of the Central Hockey League today announced the signing of two players which will bring veteran leadership to the organization. Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations, Jason Christie, has announced that goaltender Marco Emond and defenseman Jamie Lovell have agreed to terms for the 2010-2011 season which begins in mid-October.

Thirty-three year old Marco Emond joins the PrairieThunder after splitting time last season with the CHL Tulsa Oilers and in France with the Hockey Club Neuilly-sur-Marne. The 5’-10”, 195 lbs. native of Valleyfield, Quebec begins his thirteenth professional season having previously been associated with three Central Hockey League championship teams.

Wichita and Rio Grande Valley Swap Forwards

In one of the biggest off-season deals this summer, the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees shipped forward Jesse Bennefield to the rejuvenated Wichita Thunder in exchange for forward Tomas Klempa and future considerations.

Bennefield has been an offensive force for the Bees over the past two seasons playing 114 games and scoring 59 goals (third on the franchise’s all-time goal list) and 130 points (fourth on the Bees all-time points list). He set franchise records in 2008-09 with 35 goals and 71 points.

Thunder Adds Major Scorer

The Wichita Thunder signed all-star right wing Jesse Bennefield on Tuesday afternoon. Bennefield scored 24 goals last season for the Killer Bees while adding 35 assists and was a CHL All-Star.

The 29-year old rattled off a 12-game point streak from November 14th-December 5th and totaled 20 multi-point games. Bennefield was even more productive the previous season with the Bees, his first year in the CHL. The Calgary, Alberta native tied for fifth in the CHL with 35 goals and tied for 12th with 71 points.

Today, the Rapid City Rush are making noise with a pair of big signings for the 2010-11 season. The Rush welcome back last season’s CHL Rookie of the Year in goaltender Danny Battochio and also add defenseman Vladimir Hartinger who will serve as player-assistant for the upcoming season.

The signing bring the 2010-11 Rush roster total to 13 players. Battochio returns after a stellar rookie campaign that culminated with a CHL Finals Game 6 victory to secure the Presidents’ Cup for Rapid City.

The Quad City Mallards of the “AA” Central Hockey League today announced that they have signed left wing Mike McLean and inked a tryout agreement with left wing Kirill Kitsyn. Per club policy, no contract terms were announced.

Last season McLean, 24, totaled 16 goals and 38 points in 66 ECHL games with the Cincinnati Cyclones and Gwinnett Gladiators and also played six American Hockey League games for the Milwaukee Admirals.

Kevin Reiter returns to Komet nets

The Komets announced Tuesday that goaltender Kevin Reiter has agreed to terms and has been added to the 2010-11 preseason roster. Reiter, 29, will be returning to the Komets for his second stint after collecting the 2008 Huber Trophy and Turner Cup Championship with the Komets.

Reiter registered a career high 32 wins in the Fort Wayne nets during 2007-08 while posting a 2.34 goals-against-average and .910 save percentage before sharing time in the playoffs with teammate Nick Boucher.

RiverKings Sign On Versatile Forward Matt Piegza

The Mississippi RiverKings of the Central Hockey League (CHL) today announced the signing of rookie forward Matt Piegza (pronounced pee-AY-zah) to the roster for the 2010-2011 regular season. Piegza becomes the 17th announced signing by the RiverKings during the off-season.

Matt becomes the tenth forward added to the Mississippi roster. RiverKings Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Kevin "Killer" Kaminski believes Piegza will bring everything. "The report on him is that he will be a strong skater with high energy," Kaminski said.

Bucks Bring Back O’Leary

The Laredo Bucks of the Central Hockey League announced Tuesday that they have re-signed forward Mark O’Leary for the 2010-11 season. O’Leary is entering his fifth professional season, including his second with the Bucks.

In 199 professional games the 25-year-old O’Leary has put up a total of 64 points (29-35=64) for eight different professional teams. Last season O’Leary had six points (3-3=6) and a plus-three rating in just nine games for the Bucks as he suffered a season ending injury on January 29th against Texas.

Bucks Matt Brayfield Heads to AHL's Crunch

The Laredo Bucks of the Central Hockey League are proud to announce that equipment manager Matt Brayfield has been named assistant equipment manager for the Syracuse Crunch of the American Hockey League. The Crunch are the AHL affiliate of the NHL’s Anaheim Ducks.

The 25-year-old Brayfield spent the last two seasons with the Bucks and was the head equipment manager for the South Texas All-Stars at the 2010 CHL All Star game in Laredo.

Gord Nelson, 63, takes ice for Oilers in Alumni Game

The hockey season got off to its unofficial start Saturday night with the third annual Tulsa Oilers Alumni Game before a full house at the Oilers Ice Center.

This year's headline attraction was Gord Nelson, who played with Tulsa from 1967 to 1971. At 63, Nelson was the oldest player on the ice Saturday (he's about seven months older than former Oiler player and coach Gary Unger, who played for the third straight year) and the one who traveled the longest distance to participate.
