The Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs of the Central Hockey League today announced the addition of defenseman Mitch Love to their 2010-11 roster. Love has spent his entire professional career in the American Hockey League, where he played 278 games over the past five seasons.
Love, 26, is a rugged defenseman who brings a wealth of high-level experience to the Mudbugs. The 6-0, 175-pounder has racked up 51 fighting majors over the past two seasons and 824 penalty minutes in his five-year career. A healthy and happy Marian Gaborik took part in his first unofficial group workout with his Rangers teammates on Wednesday morning at the MSG Training Center. A bit jet-lagged after arriving in New York from his native Slovakia the previous day, Gaborik, nonetheless, displayed his elite skills during drills and a full scrimmage.
“It’s good for the guys to get in some skating and scrimmaging, get ready for a hard camp,” said Gaborik, who equaled his career-best with 42 goals last season and set a new career-high in points with 86.

The federal government is being asked to pay 45 percent of the price tag for a new arena — about $180 million — that could bring the National Hockey League back to Quebec City.
The pressure intensified on Ottawa after the provincial government announced its own pledge Tuesday to fund 45 per cent of the project. With the municipality promising to fund the rest, Tuesday's development places the federal government in a position to make or break the plan to build a new multi-purpose arena.

Olli Jokinen is admittedly not much of a golfer. Jokinen's return to the Calgary Flames has its share of controversy, but the centre vows to be a different player this time around.
On the eve of the club's annual charity golf tournament at Country Hills -- which leads into training camp and then the season -- Jokinen said he will bounce back from the performance he gave during his one-year stint in Calgary.

Turns out two of the newest Carolina Hurricanes aren’t really all that new. Former Hurricanes Joe Corvo and Anton Babchuk are back with the team after spending some time with other clubs.
And while two of Carolina’s most recognizable names may be gone—now that Rod Brind’Amour retired and Ray Whitney left via free agency—a pair of re-acquisitions certainly will provide a dose of familiarity around the RBC Center.

Patrick Kane threw a hook, and it was "down went Toews, down went Toews." The Blackhawks captain fell like a stone and Kane erupted, throwing his arms up in the air and letting out a few "woo hoos."
Kane, a 5-foot-10, 180-pound artist on the ice, has never been in an NHL fight. But in NHL 11 from EA Sports, the 21-year-old from Buffalo apparently is a brawler. At least, that's what he was Wednesday afternoon when he squared off against Chicago teammate Jonathan Toews, this year's EA NHL 11 cover boy, at the NHL Powered by Reebok Store in midtown Manhattan.

Christian, 40, has requested that the details of his decision not be printed until he is announced as a member of his new Central Hockey League team, but the Mavericks did confirm Wednesday afternoon that Christian would not return this season.

In bed, asleep, Nazem Kadri(notes) had no idea what was coming. His phone rang. He answered, groggily, to hear London Knights assistant coach Jacques Beaulieu bearing good news. Kadri had been called up to play for the Toronto Maple Leafs – that night.
“I said something to him that I’m not going to say right now,” said Kadri, smiling. “Then I just hung up the phone.” “He basically told me to go to hell,” said Beaulieu with a laugh. “ ‘Don’t mess around with me at 8:30 in the morning.’ ”

n the wake of the collective bargaining agreement being ratified by the Central Hockey League and the players' association, did you notice the shots doled out toward the Komets?
Here's the problem with the ideas that the ability to have as many as eight veterans is either the fault of the Komets, or going to be an advantage for the Komets: They have only three veterans right now. Those veterans are P.C. Drouin, Guy Dupuis and Leo Thomas.

Because he was so aggressive earlier in the summer, Komets general manager David Franke believes he can relax a bit now. The Central Hockey League and Professional Hockey Players Association announced a two-year collective-bargaining agreement Tuesday.
Key features include a limit of six veteran players with 301 or more professional games (goaltenders do not count) and a salary cap limit of about $11,000 a week. That's about $2,000 less a week and two fewer veterans than International Hockey League teams had last year.

Tomas Kaberle made it clear Wednesday that he's in control of his fate with the Maple Leafs and his relationship with Ron Wilson -- not his well-meaning father.
In his first comments about Frantisek Kaberle’s shots at coach Wilson, the Leafs and Tomas’s supposed dim future in Toronto, the younger Kaberle said his father was just sticking up for him, though not in the public manner he’d approve. Frantisek, a respected player, coach and father of two NHLers, popped off to a Czech hockey magazine when the Leafs didn’t trade Tomas as expected.

So let’s see if we’ve got this straight. The players are now getting a case of the humm-a-na humm-a-nas at the prospect of paying Donald Fehr the same amount of money the Toronto Maple Leafs will give to Colby Armstrong this season?
Actually, Fehr’s demands beyond the $3 million-a-year stipend have sent up a number of red flags amongst the rank and file. And for the first time since they basically anointed Fehr the savior of their organization, the players are taking a step back for a period of sober second thought.
