Tulsa nips Amarillo

Two goals from David Nimmo weren’t enough Wednesday afternoon, as the Tulsa Oilers slipped past the Amarillo Gorillas 4-3. Tulsa scored the game’s first two goals, when forward Jake Riddle capitalized on goaltender Mike Brown’s turnover behind his own net at the 12:34 mark.

Former Gorillas defenseman Tyler Butler piled on with a slap shot marker 5:13 later. Amarillo took advantage of their only power-play of the period, when David Nimmo scored his 25th on the year after he accepted a feed from Anthony Battaglia in front of the Tulsa goal. At the end of one, Tulsa 2 Amarillo 1.

Kollen Long's CHL Report (March 10)

LOOKS LIKE A KEEPER: Due to an awful opening-night roster, late-season injury troubles and a seemingly endless search for leftover talent, the Wichita Thunder has suited up 46 players — too many of them forgettable and disposable.

Tomas Klempa, though, appears to be an exception. Although undersized, the rookie forward looks like a player the Thunder would benefit from bringing back next season.

Pressure? What pressure? Oh, just the pressure of knowing that your season will come to an end next week unless your team continues to play the kind of hockey that has put it in a position to reach the postseason as a first-year squad.

“I don’t see it as pressure,” Missouri Mavericks goaltender Charlie Effinger said when asked about the final two weeks of a whirlwind inaugural campaign that has seen a love affair develop between a team and its unwavering fans.

His presence as a heavyweight in the CHL for four of the six years he’s been a pro, Joly has had a couple run-ins with Colorado’s biggest names. That includes a tussle or two with now-assistant coach Greg Pankewicz, fights with Fraser Filipic and plenty of words with Alex Penner.
